  • American Eagle

Birdwatching As mentioned, the realms of Kenai Fjords tours promise untold opportunities to watch an array of animals in their natural frozen habitat. Birds, such as: puffins, cormorants and marbled murrelets can all be viewed from the water and experiencing the squawking spectacle of a rookery at feeding time is a sight to remember. Aside from the seabirds you'll discover that geese, jays and peregrine falcons, can all be spotted against clear blue skies and the chance to see a bald eagle wheeling overhead is a sight to behold.

When to go
Temperature chart - Kenai

Kenai Fjord tours operate predominantly during the summer months or June, July and August when the park is more accessible, the days are long, the temperatures are warmest and nature is in full bloom. Winters can get as cold as minus 20 with chances of snow frequent. Be prepared for anything is definitely the order of the day even during the summer as although the months from June to August often promise bright and clear sunny days the chance of rain is never far behind. Snow can still be found the higher up you explore and the need to take care when exploring glacial areas is paramount to enjoying a successful trip. In general, if you're hoping to avoid getting wet then May is the best month to visit however.

Insider Tip: Live like an Alaskan and catch your dinner
Killer Whales

If you really want to know what life is all about in Alaska then there's no better way than to try your hand at fishing in Resurrection Bay. Woolly jumpers are optional but you will require a certain degree of patience and if you've got what it takes to steal a salmon from an interested Orca then well done you! Most trips depart from Seward and allow you to explore the dramatic coastline as you hunt for the likes of red snapper, halibut and lingcod. Make sure you bring your camera as even if you don't catch supper you'll still be treated to some amazing scenery as well as plenty of invigorating sea air.
