Canadian Rockies

  • Yoho National Park

    Yoho National Park Awe and wonder aren't words to be distributed liberally however, as this is what Yoho means via the Native American translation, you better prepare yourself for just that. Yoho National Park is blessed with some of Canada's most impressive water features, with Kicking Horse River, Takakkaw Falls and Emerald Lake all providing some incredibly picturesque backdrops to walking trails and picnic pastures. Located in British Columbia and providing the western slopes for Canada's Rockies, this is a lesser visited but nonetheless worthwhile national park that is packed-full of natural beauty.

    Banff National Park An oldie but a total goodie, Banff National Park is the elder statesman on the Canadian Rockies' circuit and features some of the country's best-loved glacial lakes and icefields. Just as popular in the winter as it is the summer, Banff has a wealth of hiking trails and hot springs to rival the enviable ski slopes and if you're hoping to incorporate animal encounters into your trip, you won't be disappointed. With almost 60 different species of mammal calling the park home, including wolverines, lynx and cougar, it's easy to see why Banff National Park is a wildlife watcher's dream destination.

    Jasper National Park If you want to really encapsulate the great outdoors on your trip to Canada then they don't come much greater than Jasper National Park , because with boundaries pushing over 4000 square miles, this is the largest preserved area in the whole of the Canadian Rockies . Clean and fresh mountain air, combined with picturesque lakes, limestone caves and geothermal activity, make for an extremely memorable experience and if you're into rafting and kayaking then there's no better place to be. When to go

If you're into your skiing, boarding and snow-covered scenery then you'll be quite aware of the Canadian Rockies' draw during the winter however, for the campers and hikers, June, July and August are recommended for getting the best of the warmer weather. As snow can fall as early as September it's best to pay heed to your guide's weather warnings outside of the summer months although, that said, the national parks are simply incredible during the autumn and if you don't mind the cold then this is also an incredibly worthwhile experience.

Jasper National Park

If you get a chance to take in the sights of Highway 93 as it winds its way through the peaks and troughs of Alberta, you'll be treated to one of the most incredible road trips on the planet. Scenic route really doesn't cut the mustard here and from the Crowfoot Glacier and Columbia Icefield to the waterfalls of Jasper National Park , this is a stunning and often breath-taking trip of a lifetime. Thankfully there are loads of places to pull over and enjoy the view and although it can get busy during the summer, you won't hear many drivers complaining about the need for speed.
