Highlights & Activities
  • Cable car to Whistler Mountain

Cable car to Whistler Mountain Famed throughout the world during the winter sports' season, Whistler Mountain has long been a mecca for ski and snowboard enthusiasts yet, during the summer months, the mountain's cable cars carry a much more peaceful brand of passenger. The Jasper Tramway is regarded as the lengthiest of its kind in the whole of Canada and with alpine views taking in some 50 miles this has to be one of the most scenic trips on the planet. Be aware: the summit of Whistler is almost 7500 feet up so anyone suffering from vertigo or altitude ailments may want to sit this one out.

  • Maligne Lake

Maligne Lake Imagine picnicking on the shores of a mirrored lake where glaciers loom in the distance and tiny faraway islands hint of adventure and fairy-tales. With a wealth of wildlife, including grizzlies, caribou, moose and monstrous rainbow trout, a trip on the Maligne Lake will leave you in no doubt as to the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies and it will come as no surprise that the lake's Spirit Island is one of the most photographed locations on the planet.

  • Mountain biking in Jasper

Mountain Biking in Jasper If you feel the need for speed or perhaps just fancy free-wheeling along gentle gradients, then mount your trusty saddle and pedal off on one of almost 50 mountain bike trails that can be found throughout the Whistler Mountains. No matter what your competence you're bound to find the right track to suit you and no sooner have you donned your equipment and set off along a pine-flanked path, you'll soon remember what a joy it is to be riding a bike.

  • Mt Edith Cavell

The Angel Trail on Mt Edith Cavell This legendary natural ice sculpture is fading fast so making the pilgrimage to see the Angel Glacier has taken on much more significance in recent years. There is an excellent looping trail that will take you via flower-strewn meadows and pristine glacial ponds until you finally come face to face with the spread wings of the Angel. This is a great way to find out more about the ever-changing environment and rates as one of the top things to do in Jasper. Best advice: when going on any mountain trail be sure to carry extra layers as it can get cool, particularly in the shade.

When to go
Temperature chart - Jasper

For all Jasper tours you'll need to be aware that it can get chilly during the evening and the higher up you go then the more layers you're going to need. This is especially true of some of the hikes as those mountains and glaciers do have a tendency to shield you from the sun even in the summer months. Although summer is relatively short i.e. June to August, you can look forward to a fair bit of warmth in July which makes it perfect for trail walkers and those wishing to explore the valley floor. Late September is generally colder but as the leaves turn from green to red you'll barely notice.

Insider Tip - Visit Columbia Ice Field
Columbia Ice Field

Spread over the parks of Banff and Jasper, the Columbia Ice Field is a vast area of snow and ice which stretches for some 200 square miles and is responsible for feeding 8 of the parks' most well-respected glaciers. This is an incredibly humbling experience and thanks to a well-equipped snow coach and an extremely knowledgeable guide you'll be able to understand the magnitude of this frozen world and what it feels like to walk upon one of the world's most phenomenal natural sites.
