The northern lights are created when charged solar particles collide with Earth's air molecules and the energy produced is emitted as light. Rings of light form around the poles called auroral ovals, but the rings can expand allowing the lights to be seen from greater distances. The lights form high above Earth, usually above 40 miles and sometimes as much as 600 miles, higher than the Space Shuttle travels.
