Day 1-2: San Francisco & Yosemite National Park

Why not check out San Francisco's famous Golden Gate Bridge; completed in 1937, this iconic suspension bridge stretches for 2.7 km (1.7 miles) and is probably the most photographed bridge in the world. You can then drive east through California's historic gold country straight into the Yosemite National Park region.

Yosemite National Park sits nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range of northern California. Here green forest meets granite walls measuring several thousand feet in height. Rock climbers come from all over the world to scale the rocks whilst hikers get to walk to the base of some of the largest waterfalls in the world. Here you can hike along many different trails and explore the park, whilst seeing some of Yosemite's famous sites such as Yosemite Falls, Nevada Falls, Vernal Falls, Mirror Lake and Half Dome.

Day 3: Nevada Desert

Continuing east towards Utah and Zion National Park, the Nevada desert makes a great stopping point for the night. From June to October you can drive over the Tioga Pass passing crystal clear lakes and spectacular mountain scenery.

Day 4-5: Zion National Park

When you arrive at Zion you will see that it is like a true oasis rising up from the desert floor! Zion's multi-coloured cliffs and spring-fed hanging gardens are spectacular. Zion Canyon was named by the early Mormon settlers of Utah who thought of it as their 'promised land'. Some of the best hiking in southwest USA can be found here in and around the fertile Virgin River Gorge.

It's easy to spend a day exploring what Zion has to offer, with plenty of hiking options to choose from, ranging from easy to strenuous. The ambitious walker can choose to ascend 760 metres (2500 feet) to experience unbeatable panoramic views from the top of Angels Landing or you may choose to hike deep into the beautiful Zion Narrows.

Day 6: Bryce Canyon National Park

Not far from Zion is Bryce Canyon National Park, which is definitely worth a visit! Bryce Canyon is a fascinating natural amphitheatre of pink, orange and white sandstone spires, known locally as 'hoodoos'. There are a variety of scenic overlooks and trails that range from easy to moderate in difficulty. The Navajo or Peek-a-Boo Loop trails will enable you to hike right in amongst these unique rock formations. Wherever you walk, you will encounter a kaleidoscope of colours and a fantasy land of rock spires that will leave you searching for your own way to describe this 'indescribable' place.

Day 7: Lake Powell

Day 8: Monument Valley

No visit to Southwest USA can be complete without a visit to Monument Valley, the most majestic and most photographed landscape on earth. A sacred land to the Navajo Nation who call it home, the red sandstone monoliths and spectacular sunsets and sunrises have been the backdrop to countless 'westerns' movies.

Day 9-10: Grand Canyon National Park

Nothing you have ever seen will prepare you for what you're about to see next, the mighty Grand Canyon! Carved over several millennia, this massive wonder of nature is 445 kilometres (277 miles) long, up to 29 kilometres (18 miles) wide and over 1.6 kilometres (1 mile) deep. Hike from the forest above to the desert below, red rock to white powder or for the more adventurous take a helicopter flight for a birds-eye view and to marvel at the beautiful colours.

There are so many options at the Grand Canyon it's worth spending a day here. You can venture down the Bright Angel Trail to Plateau Point, or just stroll along the more leisurely West Rim Trail. There is also a great shuttle bus service that allows you to access different areas of the park.

Day 11-12: Las Vegas

Leave nature behind and head into Las Vegas for all of its neon splendour! Las Vegas is the fastest growing city in the United States - home to pirates and pyramids, weddings and waterfalls. Have a flutter in one of the many resort hotels, or enjoy dinner at one of the famous all-you-can-eat buffets!

You won't be lost for things to do with a day in Vegas! You could explore the many resort hotels, go shopping in one of the great value outlet malls, watch the amazing fountain display at the Bellagio hotel or even catch a Cirque Du Soleil show.

Day 13: Los Angeles

Head to the coast and the city of Los Angeles where you can drive along the superfast highway or take the slower Route 66 for a taste of true Americana. Consider stopping at the town of Seligman, where there is heaps of Americana road trip memorabilia.
