Thanks to the never ending flow of both the Colorado and the Green rivers, the vast area known as Canyonlands National Park will no doubt linger in the memory for years to come as this is pretty much as surreal and magical a place as you can expect to encounter in the southwest USA . Stretching for over 300,000 acres and being split into 4 distinct districts Canyonlands holds a wide range of outdoor activities as well as its fascinating features and trying your hand at white-water rafting or kayaking is an excellent compliment to any hiking trip. Of course, photographers will be in their absolute element and capturing any one of the reddy pink canyons, buttes and river eroded arches will no doubt give you enough subject matter to last a lifetime.

Highlights
  • Dead Horse Point

Dead Horse Point As a state park within its own right, Dead Horse Point has become widely known as one of the best vantage points to take in the majesty of Moab and thanks to several viewing areas as well as an excellent visitor centre, this is certainly a 'must visit' on Canyonlands tours. For film buffs you may recognise the landscapes as providing the backdrop to the final scene from Thelma & Louise however, for everyone else, the views over the Colorado River and the 9-mile hiking trail will provide more than enough drama for one day.

  • Hummer Tour

Recreational Activities It's always the way with spectacular landscapes that sometimes walking or picnicking just isn't enough and although the chance to get the adrenaline flowing is readily available in most extreme formats taking things at your own pace is always best advice. Mountain biking, white-water rafting and 4x4 tours allow you not only to go that little bit faster but also give you entry to areas of the park that are hard to access on Canyonlands National park hiking trails.

When to go
Temperature chart - Canyonlands

Warm and dry with the chance of monsoon-like deluges best describes the summer in the Canyonlands and as such bringing along that pack-o-mac is definitely advisable, especially during July and August. After an afternoon storm things do tend to dry up at a super quick rate and as temperatures post-precipitation drop an extra 10 or so degrees, sometimes a storm can be exactly what the witch doctor ordered. As the park is open all-year-round visiting in the spring is pretty much the best time if you want to avoid the heat and the crowds with March, April and May considered to be picture perfect with desert flowers, such as Indian Paintbrush, just starting to appear amongst the rocks. Although it can get windy in the spring this can be far in a way preferable to the summer heat but if you simply can't bear the breeze then any time between September through to early November should be ideal. The winter months can get really cold with ice and frost underfoot making some trails treacherous however, that said, catching the park on a crisp and fresh blue sky day in January has to be seen to be believed.

Insider Tip: Chelser Park Loop / Joint Trail
Chelser Park Canyonlands

This 11 mile easy day hike regularly tops the bill on our Tour Leaders' favourite hikes in the Southwest. Hiking three miles along this trail brings visitors to a saddle overlooking Chesler Park, a scenic expanse of desert grasses and shrubs surrounded by colourful sandstone spires and mesas. Those who continue their journey on the loop around Chesler will be rewarded with a hike unlike any other in America. The path winds through a series of deep, narrow fractures called the Joint Trail, and encases walkers between Cathedral-like walls.
