Lake Powell

Visiting a reservoir may not at first instances sound like the most exciting of locations for your holidays in southwest USA however, this man-made stretch of water is blessed with some outstanding natural features that regularly attract up to 2 million visitors each year.

Rainbow Bridge alone is well-worth your interest and with numerous hiking trails within the Navajo Mountain foothills and surrounding canyons, you'll find an abundance of tried and tested spots to help you make the most of Lake Powell's reflective beauty.

Secluded sandstone coves make it possible to swim and relax and if you're into your water sports then Lake Powell certainly ticks all of the right boxes with water skiing, boat cruises and kayak tours all providing the ideal way to enjoy the Utah or Arizona sunshine.

  • Kayaking at Lake Powell

Watersports As you'd expect from a lake that has almost 2000 miles of coastline, Lake Powell has more than its fair share of marinas and water sports centres to help you dive right in. No matter whether you've never got involved with water-based activities before this is a great chance to try something new with wakeboarding, kayaking, fishing, water skiing and sailing all extremely popular. Whatever your pace, you're bound to find the right sport to suit you and even if you just fancy watching the fun from the safety of dry land then there's more than enough places to do so.

Sandstone coves - Relax and Swim You can quite literally get lost on Lake Powell, thanks to the 100 major canyons just waiting for you to explore. Feeling the lap of the crystal clear water's edge and getting afloat is always a great way to spend a day in the sunshine. Thanks to Lake Powell's summer temperatures: diving, swimming and snorkelling are all great options and if you wish to push off and explore by boat it's relatively easy to find your own secluded sandstone cove from where to enjoy a bit of peace and quiet.

When to go
Temperature chart - Lake Powell

It really depends on whether you prefer exploring on foot or by boat as to the best time to visit Lake Powell as temperatures can soar in the summer making hiking hard but swimming like succumbing to a warm bath. As a rule of thumb, things start to heat up around June and tend to stay that way until end of September. School holidays inevitably lead to more noise around shallow areas and more crowds however, even during the summer you can still find your own isolated inlet and sandstone cove far from the splashing crowd. April/May or September/October still get a bit of warmth and certainly have fewer tourists which makes straddling the summer ideal for walkers and comfortable for exploring either on land or afloat. Winters can get extremely chilly but do present some quite amazing reflective photography opportunities as well as being bereft of the usual abundance of coaches and holiday makers.

Insider Tip: Cathedral Canyon
Horseshoe Bend

Leaving from the trailhead in Page, AZ, it's a short, sandy, (mildly) strenuous but spectacular hike to the famed Horseshoe Bend lookout, located within Glen Canyon. The view from the top is uninterrupted by fences or barriers, and it's possible to get right up to the edge of the cliff - so take extra care! Often described as one of the most beautiful natural scenes in America, the 270 degree kink in the Colorado River will be etched into your memory forever.
