Valdez Insider Tips

Grab a paddle
Even if you've never held paddles before, sea kayaking in and around the Columbia Glacier is easy to get the hang of and the sights you'll encounter make the next day's arm ache hardly noticeable. Dripping icebergs, moraine hikes and the chances to spot whales and bears en-route make this one of the best activities in the whole of Alaska. Note: listening to your instructors is vital for your safety and as you'll be kitted out with all the latest equipment, as well as being presented with safety guidelines, so you can rest assured you'll be well looked after as you explore.
When to go
Well-known for its guaranteed snow fall, Valdez is pretty much covered from October through to April with temperatures rarely getting above 5C. Anyone wishing to catch the spring flowers and migratory birds should visit in April, May and June. July is usually the warmest month with the most daylight and the least amount of rain, making it ideal for hikers and kayakers who are on the hunt for glaciers. August signals the start of the rain, but also marks the change from summer to autumn meaning you'll find less crowds just before the snow starts to fall.
