Big Bend National Park, Texas

Covering well over 1,000sq miles of protected landscapes and encompassing a quarter of the Rio Grande's natural border between Mexico and the USA, Big Bend is one of the most remote and unique national parks in America.

Big Bend National Park Tours

Big Bend National Park ToursFilled with dusty trails which lead high up into the mountains before descending deep into cool shaded valleys, hiking is pretty much the best means of getting around in Big Bend although idly floating down the river comes a pretty close second.

With some spectacular rock formations (layered canyons and sandstone towers), this is an excellent chance to experience all that Texas has to offer, and despite the rather harsh conditions you'll still find numerous critters and no end of cacti, making Big Bend National Park perfect for nature trails.

Insider Tips

An official dark sky park
If you've ever fancied gazing up at the night's sky bereft of artificial light interference then zip up your sleeping bag and extend your telescope because this is an official Dark Sky Park. Thanks to Big Bend's remote location, general lack of cloud and lower humidity levels, you'll find a bedazzling array of some 2000 stars that can be seen without the aid of a telescope.
When to go
Although the winter nights can get a bit nippy this should by no means stand in the way of what promises to be a completely absorbing experience. Sunshine is abundant most days during the year, with pleasant springtime being one of the most popular times to visit. Summers are inevitably hot, and even during rainy periods, the deluges can bring welcome relief from the heat.
Highlights & Activities

Big Bend National Park Tour Highlights

Chihuahuan Desert
Photography, hiking and horse-riding are all excellent options on a guided tour and if you're searching for peace and quiet with some of the most sublime sun sets this side of the Mexican border then this is as near to perfection as it gets.
Chisos Mountains
Some of the desert views from Emory Peak (the highest at almost 8,000ft) are simply spectacular and following the 9 mile trail to the summit is fairly hard going but definitely an option for fit and healthy hikers.
Rio Grande
The Rio Grande river creates a natural border with Mexico and provides obvious recreational potential and a day spent floating through canyons caps a thoroughly absorbing exploration of one of America's most remote areas.
