Several islands off the coast of Maine, including Baker Island and Isle au Haut, also form Acadia however, it's Mount Desert Island that's considered to be the jewel in the crown. Film stars, millionaires and tourist hordes flock to Mount Desert Island.

Towns such as Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor and Tremont contain plenty of picture postcard seaside views, where fish suppers and bobbing boats are always cause for celebration.

The summer in Acadia National Park promises no end of opportunities to get closer to the natural world and find out more about the flora and fauna that can be found in abundance. Follow a park ranger into the wide blue yonder and get the best advice from where to walk and where to go bird-watching. Watch slideshows and attend Q&A sessions to learn all about the area from these friendly and knowledgeable local folk.
When to go
At the beginning of September you'll find an ideal climate for hiking and hardly any crowds. Towards the end of September the colourful fall foliage draws more visitors, but this spectacular natural display is well worth sharing. May and June also offer a crowd-free time of year to visit although evenings are chilly. The summer offers warm days with a light breeze from the Atlantic, making it an idyllic time to visit, albeit its busiest season.

Hiking in Acadia National Park is pretty much the done thing and you'll find numerous trails and tracks which lead through some sublime scenery. Many of the recognised mountain footpaths will take you over granite peaks in search of awesome Atlantic views.

In Acadia National Park you'll never be far away from some stunning scenery. Mountain foothills, woodland trails and lake side paths provide the lion's share of options as well as plenty of remote headlands and charming white painted lighthouses.
