Appalachian Trail

This is not simply a walk in the woods, as Bill Bryson discovered! Walking the Appalachian Trail in New England will certainly give you an insight into the staggering scenery that is rarely encountered by your everyday sightseer.

Appalachian Trail Tours

Appalachian Trail ToursThe Appalachian Trail in its entirety is very long. In fact, it's over 2000 miles long, and crosses through 14 different states.

Now we've got that out of the way, it is of course possible to enjoy sections of the Appalachian Trail without too much trouble. Some of the most enticing landscapes can be found within the 600 odd miles that slice through New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine.

Although the ground is considered to be fairly rugged as it appears above the tree line, the distances seen from some of the peaks of the White Mountains are simply breathtaking

Appalachian Trail Insider Tips

Fall Foliage
There are numerous suggestions on how to hike the Appalachian Trail but the best advice we can give you is to hike a small part and enjoy the scenery at your leisure, and take some stunning photographs along the way. Although the challenge of busting as many miles as possible in a short time may be appealing to some this probably couldn't be further from enjoyment for others.
When to go
However you choose to approach the Appalachians, one thing is for sure, come the autumn months you'll be met by an incredible display of natural colour that will no doubt have you hunting for your camera quicker than hot butter melting off a triple stack of breakfast waffles. Be prepared for all weather conditions, including extreme and unexpected weather changes year-round.

Appalachian Trail Highlights

The White Mountains
The White Mountains make up over 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail. They promise an incredible explosion of colour around the autumn and a must if you want your Appalachian Trail tours to include an alpine view.
Baxter State Park
This little pocket of Piscataquis County, in the mid-north of Maine, is a much lesser-visited section of the Appalachian Trail and well-worth your time if you fancy a spot of wilderness hiking. Baxter State Park is also home to a hugely diverse range of wildlife.
The Green Mountains
Vermont is an all-year-round destination and some of the views that you'll discover around the Stowe area are absolutely stunning, and one of the best places to hike in alpine conditions anywhere in America.
Fall Foliage
Around mid-September, head north to south. New England's states are well-known for their wonderful natural displays of changing fall foliage and idly strolling through a thick carpet of red, yellow and orange leaves is pretty much par for the course.
