Baxter State Park, Maine

This is some serious wilderness country! Anyone hiking the Appalachian Trail section through Baxter State Park needs to be at the top of their game...

Baxter State Park Tours

Baxter State Park ToursThe park itself incorporates over 200,000 acres of mountain peaks and thick forest as well as numerous lakes, rivers and streams which eventually flow into some impressive waterfalls.

The main draws of the area are hiking and photography, so if you're looking to get away from it all and explore one of the hardest stretches of the Appalachian Trail then Baxter is certainly one of the best places to do just that.

Baxter Insider Tips

Hiking Tips
Of course, heading deep into the heart of areas like the Hundred Mile Wilderness will take you far, far away from anything resembling civilisation and pre-planning is always advisable. Although many hiking trails in Baxter involve shaded forest settings it's still worth wearing a hat, applying cream and taking plenty of water to avoid dehydration and the effects of too much sun.
When to go
If you're hoping to catch some colourful canopies whilst visiting New England in mid to late September then you'll be pleased to learn that the higher elevations of Baxter State Park are pretty much the place to be around this time of year. Winters are cold and certainly not to be taken lightly, although you will basically get the park trails to yourself as well as some scintillating snow covered scenery.
Highlights & Activities

Baxter State Park Tour Highlights

Mount Katadhin
As the highest peak in Maine (at over 5000 feet), Mount Katadhin has long been attracting hikers and climbers with the fittingly named Knife Edge Trail providing access to the summit via the thinnest of paths (just 3 feet in places).
Katahdin Stream Falls
Waterfalls are also pretty prevalent within the park and one such: the Katahdin Stream Falls, is certainly worth taking note of with the views from the steep Hunt Trail well-worth the trek.
