San Francisco Insider Tips

Clam chowder and crab
One of our all-time favourite experiences on our San Francisco tours is sitting on the waterfront with a bread bowl of clam chowder steaming away on your lap as seals and sea-lions lounge and swim in the mid-afternoon sunlight. Of course, a big hunk of sourdough, accompanied by well-seasoned crab legs, is a pretty tasty alternative - but then, if you're in San Francisco, eating out and enjoying the view is pretty hard to beat no matter what you're into. Best location? Fisherman's Wharf has some of the city's best chowder and crab stands as well as loads of places to perch.
When to go
Well-known for its blend of cool summers and wet winters, San Francisco offers a breath of fresh air away from the scorching Californian coastline further south. The mild temperatures are mainly attributed to the ocean currents, and present a relatively unchanging climate which is great news for visitors no matter what the time of year. Thanks to the city's hills many neighbourhoods are protected from the winds and the rain coming off the Pacific and as such dry summer temperatures generally sit around the 20C mark, getting slightly chillier in the wetter winter.

San Francisco Tour Highlights

Golden Gate Bridge
As far as iconic city symbols go, San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge truly is a remarkable structure in every sense of the word. Stroll along this impressively constructed suspension bridge which stretches for almost two miles and is over three-quarters of a century old.
Cable Cars & Fisherman's Wharf
Riding a little piece of history and making the journey from Union Square to the waterfront is a joy. Fisherman's Wharf is home to some quintessential landmarks including the shops of Pier 39 and bucket-loads of clam chowder.
Alcatraz Island
In the bay lies the infamous 'Rock' and anyone wishing to visit Alcatraz Island today can expect to find many of the prison's buildings still intact. Exploring the inmates' dining hall, recreation yard and parade grounds is often an eerie experience not to be forgotten.
Famous Hilly Streets
A close proximity to the San Andreas and the Hayward fault lines has resulted in a collection of 'humps and bumps' along a series of unique streets. One of the steepest, Lombard Street, boasts no fewer than 8 hair-pin bends.
